Anni Leppala

            

Annie Leppala is a photographer who was born in 1981 in Helsinki. She really appreciates what she can do with a camera and a lot of her work is based in the present. She also likes to work with freezing time and seizing the moment, which is reflected through her photographs. I find her photography to be very elegant and subtle. She photographs a lot of landscapes and forestry type settings but I’ve also realized that she herself is in the majority of her photos. I think she looks nicely presented in her photos due to her bright hair and very pale completion, I find her interesting. How ever you never see her face in these you see the back of her head but even if she’s facing the camera she is covered with hair as if she is hiding from the camera or something else in the room.

            Leppala currently has an exhibition going on in London. It is in the Purdy Hicks Gallery and I recommend taking the tube to get there as the easiest route. If you are interested in photography I would advise to go to this exhibition because Lepalla is a new up and coming photographer and you may be able to get some advice or inspiration from her work and the images themselves are just so beautiful so this show in my eyes is a must see. Pat Perry

Pat Perry is an artist who is from Michigan, as an artist he is committed to real things; he works from observation either capturing things in good detail or keeping lose and leaving his work minimal. However I find all his work captivating and interesting. The reason for this is because of his attention to detail in sketches of his work that you can find throughout his website and blog. Furthermore on the pieces of work where he has drawn landscapes for example he pays attention to a main part or the landscape and leaving only suggestions of parts of the landscape to help ground and place what he has already drawn.

This is just one of his pieces of work that I have chosen to look at and speak about. Pat Perry has drawn this as part of his work in Alaska; to create this piece of work he has used the mountains and landscape of Alaska and used wild life that you may see around the country.

One month After Being Battered

Nan Goldin is an American artist who was born in 1953. She has been taking photos since she was a teenager in Boston. Her earliest work was done in black and white and consisted of drag queens because she believed and was a part of their culture. Later she attended School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston she started producing slide shows and they acquired the title The Ballad Of Sexual Dependency. This is a picture I found by Nan Goldin and have previously researched called ‘One Month After Being Battered’ 1984.

            I find this image so fascinating and it caught my eye straight away. There are so many different emotions in this piece and they are projected so well. Her general facial expression gives the feeling of slight discomfort. As if she is thinking of the dramatic time that had happened. How ever she doesn’t look distraught, she still has a strong face on as if she is saying “I don’t care I’ll get through this.” How ever that’s what I get from the left side of her face because of the little damage to her eye in comparison to the right. Her right eye does look hurt and unhappy, you can see the pain and it slightly looks like it’s watering. The injury is also so intense that there is no way you can deny she is upset and hurt by this event.

            Another way I would say she is trying to give of the impression that she doesn’t care about people looking at her is because of the way she is dressed and what she’s wearing. She isn’t wearing pajamas and a hoodie as if she’s hiding away in her house, if you take away the injuries then I would think she was getting ready for a night out or on her way to a special event. Her hair is professionally done has she has make up and nice jewelry on and I find it interesting how her lipstick is the same colour red as the injury in her eye. I find that they compliment each other as if she was wearing red shoes and a red bag with the black dress.

            Whilst researching this photo I realized how much of an impact this image has had. There are several artists who have done the same photograph as Goldin. 

This is an image I found by a woman called Bridge Lucey. This image is called “If I Was An Artist I Would Be Nan Goldin”. She has do not exactly the same thing as Goldin in this image however she has added a modern twist to it. Godin’s image was taken in the 80’s so she has the big perm and the pearl necklace and it all ties to that era. Lucey's image was taken in 2010 so she has the short, choppy hair, which shows a sign of rebellion, and she also has a middle lip piercing which also shows this. She still has the red lipstick but because her eyes aren’t that red I find the lip piercing compliments it also.

            Over all I love both photographs because of their brutality and very strong message. Goldin must have had a lot of courage to take dress up, take that photo and release it to the public. She is an amazing photographer and I hope to look more into her work in the future.

Tim Rowan uses tools to carve into bulks of clay to create fascinating pieces of work. He has an up coming event in the summer, to talk about how his work is created and where he got his inspirations from. Tim Rowan uses sharp and finely designed tools to create his pieces of work, ready for exhibitions. He makes rapid sketches of his designs, which he then produces into final outcomes. 

Tim Rowan has exhibited work in the Cavin Morris- Gallery in New York, Lacoste, and has won many awards for his fine making and firing. 

He has been awarded with a BFA from the State University of New York, and a MFA award from The   Pennsylvania State University.

Big Five

‘Big Five’ is a limited edition print in which there is a sort of beauty. in this print you need to study the work to get the true picture. You can see the print is made up of different animals such as a cheater, an elephant, a rhino a lion and a moose, I believe this is to represent the animal kingdom in all its glory and wisdom. I personally love this print because it is so unique and all prints have a number a signature and a stamp to how it is a limited edition. Jean is a new printer and he will get more successful as time goes on.
